Formation of the French subjunctive is the easy part. Learning how and when to use it correctly is when it gets a little tricky for our students. This is an activity on giving advice, suggestions and opinions using the French subjunctive. Included you will find fourteen different situations to which your students will have to respond by either making a suggestion, giving your opinion, or giving advice of some kind. Students will use the provided list of 24 expressions that must be followed by the French subjunctive to help them get started. 3 sample responses are provided for each of the 14 situations (to be used at your discretion, possible responses are provided in the answer section and the original is left open for students to use). The translations are from English to French and they involve using the present and past conditional as well as other grammar points and verb tenses that students at this level should be comfortable with. In this lesson I pay special attention to how to say "would have been", "could have been" and "should have been" in French. We teachers know that learning the French past conditional isn't so difficult once you know how to form the passé composé, but our students often need lots of examples and exercises to help them see the light at the end of the tunnel.

These 3 French definite and indefinite articles worksheets are best for students who have been studying French for a while, but who still struggle with understanding how and when to use definite as opposed to indefinite articles. Two things are very important when teaching the French futur antérieur tense. First, students need to know how this tense is formed and then they need to understand how and when to use it. Here is a set of two worksheets that can also be used as homework or quizzes. One worksheet focuses on formation of the futur antérieur while the other one has students choose between using the futur simple and the futur antérieur. Subjects or subject pronouns and infinitives are provided and students must fill in the blanks according to context. Each worksheet contains 15 sentences and answer keys are provided.

This is a really fun game to practice with your students who are learning vocabulary about LA NOURRITURE, and it involves NO PREP once you've printed and cut out the cards. I've included both a beginner and intermediate version of the game. The beginner version has the words written out and the intermediate version only shows pictures. Have a look at the thumbnails to see what they look like. Each version includes 32 cards. Depending on class size you could either give each student more than one card or have them play with a partner. I recommend printing out and laminating these cards if possible so that you can use them over and over again. Here's how this game works. Once each student has a card (or cards), the one who has the card that says JE COMMENCE starts the game. He says, for example, Je commence! J'ai une fraise. Qui a une orange? The person who has the card with an orange on it says, J'ai une orange. Qui a du bacon? And so the game goes on until the last card is called and that student's card will say, J'ai fini! Another idea is to prepare two sets of cards, divide your class into two groups and let each group have a go to see which team can get through the entire deck of cards the fastest. If the vocabulary is completely new you could start out with the beginner deck and as the words become more familiar you could move on to the intermediate level. It's really a lot of fun, and though you can play with younger students the older ones love this game just as much.

Everyone loves a good game of BATTLESHIP, and the French classroom is a better place than any! You can use this classic game format to practice regular -ER verbs. Students place boats (which are squares on the game sheets that they will have darkened with a pencil) on the game board. Students play against each other to try to find and eventually sink their opponent’s boats. Subject pronouns are written in the vertical column and infinitives are written in the boxes at the top. To choose a square, the player must say the subject and correct verb form in the present tense. If you wanted to practice writing in the passé composé you could have your students do that. Another idea is to have students make simple sentences using the subject pronoun and verb of choice. All of the vocabulary they’ll need is written right on the game sheet and it is all in French. Each game sheet includes two battleship grids and a line separating the two. Students can fold the paper on the line if they want to.
